Research shows that AI requires significantly more power than other internet services, with a single query through ChatGPT needing nearly 10 times more electricity than a standard Google search. This means that AI data centres draw huge amounts of electricity, and with it, a massive carbon footprint. According to the York U study, a typical 100 megawatt data centre would consume approximately 438,000 to 700,800 megawatt-hours annually, equivalent to the electricity consumption of roughly 40,000 to 64,000 Canadian households. This is a significant amount of energy, and it's not just the data centres themselves that are the problem. The cooling systems require a huge amount of water, with data centres globally consuming 4.5 trillion litres of water in 2025, enough to meet the needs of more than 600 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa.
