Stivers Students Lead ICE Walkout with Dayton Public Schools' Support
In a powerful display of solidarity and activism, over 200 students from Stivers School for the Arts in Dayton took a stand against the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency. On Wednesday, they walked out of their seventh-period classes, their voices united in protest. Among them was Chelsea Ruiz, whose words resonated with many:
"I am the daughter of an immigrant who left his country in search of a better life for himself and his future family. Each morning, families like mine wake up, not knowing if they will ever see each other again."
The students' message was clear: they were concerned about the actions of this federal agency and its potential impact on American democracy. The protest, organized by Stivers senior Dawn Drake, saw students chanting and walking around the school track, their voices echoing on the Dutoit Street side of Stivers, located at 1313 E 5th St.
A moment of silence was held for those who have lost their lives due to ICE protests or in ICE detention. The students' passion and determination were palpable, and their actions were supported by the Dayton Public Schools superintendent, David Lawrence. Lawrence confirmed that the Stivers principal, Paul Waller, had informed him of the protest, and the school board members endorsed it.
This protest aligns with the school's commitment to democracy and its benefits. Lawrence assured that parents were generally supportive, and students who did not want to participate were not forced to. He also emphasized the importance of open forums for all voices, acknowledging that some staff members may not share the same views.
Stivers student Ramah Lindsey urged her peers to use their voices and platforms responsibly. "Let's be on the right side of history," she said, encouraging students to call representatives, start gardens, support community organizations, and be kind to one another.
This walkout is a testament to the power of youth activism and the importance of standing up for what one believes in. As the students continue to make their voices heard, the impact of their actions will undoubtedly be felt across the community and beyond.
