Inspiring Garden Design: A Man's Journey with MS (2026)

The power of nature and its ability to heal is a concept that has been explored and celebrated for centuries. But when a man with a chronic illness like Multiple Sclerosis (MS) harnesses this power to create a therapeutic garden, it becomes a truly inspiring story. Gavin Moth, a resident of Somerset, has designed a show garden that aims to provide solace and peace to those battling chronic pain and neurological conditions.

Moth's journey with MS began in 2012, leaving him with significant physical and sensory impairments. Yet, he found an unexpected ally in horticulture. By returning to college and training as an RHS Horticulturalist, he discovered a new purpose and a way to manage his condition.

"Gardening has really helped me, both physically and mentally. It's made me happy," Moth shares, his voice filled with emotion.

The garden, a collaborative effort with horticulturist Michael Leech, is a masterpiece that tells Moth's story. Wooden archways, resembling nerves, support climbing plants, symbolizing the intricate network of the central nervous system. Symptomatic carvings on decorative rocks and carefully selected low-maintenance plants further emphasize the garden's therapeutic intent.

"The idea is to create a space where people can find peace and forget their daily struggles with illness," Moth explains.

Once the RHS Badminton Flower Show concludes, the garden will find a permanent home at Brightwell, a therapy center in Bristol. Doro Pasantes, Brightwell's CEO, was overwhelmed by the garden's beauty and its alignment with the center's mission.

"I'm proud of this and the legacy it will leave afterwards," Moth adds, reflecting on the impact his garden will have on others.

Leech, Moth's collaborator, describes the process as a journey of learning and inspiration.

"It's been a journey for myself learning about [Gavin's] journey, and MS in the wider scope of things. It's been inspirational," he says.

This story highlights the transformative power of nature and the resilience of the human spirit. It reminds us that even in the face of chronic illness, there is hope, and beauty can emerge from the most challenging circumstances.

As we reflect on Moth's journey and his remarkable garden, we are left with a deeper understanding of the therapeutic benefits of horticulture and the importance of creating spaces that promote healing and well-being.
