Amid rising tensions with Iran, Greece is bolstering Cyprus's defense capabilities with a formidable array of military assets. The Greek government has decided to deploy the state-of-the-art FDI HN frigate Kimon, equipped with the SEAFIRE radar and ASTER missiles, to provide air defense cover. This move comes in response to the recent attacks on Cyprus by hostile Iranian drones, which have targeted British military bases on the island.
The deployment includes not only the Kimon frigate but also a Hydra-class/MEKO 200HN frigate with the HAI CENTAUR C-UAS system, and two pairs of F-16 fighter jets. These measures aim to strengthen Cyprus's defenses and protect its critical infrastructure from potential threats. Defense Minister Nikos Dendias emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that Greece will contribute to the defense of Cyprus throughout the crisis.
The Kimon frigate, commissioned on December 18, 2025, and recently arriving in Cyprus, is the first of four FDI HN frigates built by Naval Group. It boasts advanced capabilities, including the SEAFIRE radar with a detection range exceeding 300 kilometers and MBDA ASTER 30 Block 1 surface-to-air missiles with a range of over 120 kilometers. These features enable the frigate to provide robust air defense coverage, ensuring the protection of Cypriot infrastructure against missiles or drones.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and President Nikos Christodoulides discussed the situation in a telephone conversation, and Minister Dendias has been in continuous contact with his Cypriot counterpart, Mr. Vasilis Palmas, to coordinate the deployment. The Greek Defense Minister will also travel to Cyprus to meet with President Christodoulides and hold consultations with Mr. Palmas, further emphasizing the importance of this strategic alliance.
This deployment marks a significant step in the security partnership between Greece and Cyprus, addressing the immediate threat posed by Iranian drones and demonstrating a commitment to mutual defense and stability in the region.
